Pakistan’s Defence Minister Accuses PTI of Undermining Champions Trophy Participation

Islamabad: Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has strongly condemned the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party for planning protests on key match days of the upcoming Champions Trophy, accusing them of trying to isolate Pakistan on the global cricket stage.

In a statement posted on social media platform X, Asif highlighted that PTI had sought permission for a rally in Lahore on February 8, coinciding with Pakistan’s first match against New Zealand in the lead-up to the Champions Trophy. Additionally, he noted that the party had announced a long march on February 19, the same day as Pakistan’s opening match in the tournament.

Asif labeled these moves as a deliberate attempt to disrupt Pakistan’s Champions Trophy preparations, calling it an "anti-national" act aimed at tarnishing the country's reputation in international cricket. He warned that such actions could endanger Pakistan’s hosting rights for the tournament.

The minister also took a swipe at PTI Chairman Imran Khan, accusing him of prioritizing his political agenda over national interests. He suggested that even PTI’s supporters might not have foreseen the extent of these actions, which he believes are designed to embarrass Pakistan on the global stage.
